In a return match following their April classic, Duffy and Feathers clashed once more at Mere Field. The outcome was to be very different as The Coat's form was exceptional and reminded the locals of November/December 1990 (not quite his peak, but not far off). After a halved opener, Duffy took the second with a regulation par. Feathers birdied four with an eight iron to 3 feet to square the game. The fifth was a turning point as Feathers looked a gift horse in the mouth - The Coat ballooned his drive way right and Feathers 3 wood disected the fairway. His seven iron was pushed however and The Coat's bogey was good enough for a half. Duffy never looked back and he birdied the next (from the ninth fairway). A par was good enough at the eighth and although an eagle chance was spurned at the ninth (the putt pulling up woefully short), a birdie saw a commanding lead develop which was never to be challenged. The match somewhat fizzled out after that, the highlight being the pair's Crossroads' reminiscences - fond memories of Amy Turtle and Shooey McFee. Duffy wrapped up the match at the 15th, triumphing 5 and 3. Feathers trudged sadly back to the clubhouse to reflect on another sad chapter in a year that has seen his form plummet to unchartered depths. Worse was to follow as he was forced to watch The Coat munch smugly on the world's largest club sandwich and chips. The only consolation was the sight of The Coat's not unsubstantial girth expanding by the minute. |
